Description of Wood: Ebony is a member of the Diospyros family. As the trees become older and mature the wood becomes very black thus accounting for the name Ebony. It was first thought that this wood came from Africa and Egypt as it was referred to in the Bible. But now authorities say the biblical references were to African Blackwood. Ebony is much darker than this. Gabon Ebony is the benchmark of black wood. It has been treasured through out the ages. It is commonly used for piano keys, organ keys as well as in fine inlay work. It primarily comes from West Africa in and is known as Swamp Ebony.
